Adventures With Linguine

Well, Linguine has had quite the adventure.  He is not allowed outside, he is an indoor cat through and through.  But he wants to go outside.  Wants it with every fiber of his being.  He sees birds and geckos out there and he just knows if he could get to them, he would be a mighty hunter indeed.

Well, a stray cat wandered through our yard this week.  He looked remarkably like Linguine.  In fact, I've seen this cat outside before and thought Linguine had escaped.
Fettuccine also has an identical twin out there but that's not relevant to this story.

Anyhow, Linguine did not think this new cat looked like his long lost brother.  He thought this stranger cat looked like the devil incarnate and was filled with the burning need to eliminate his evil twin from the planet.  He busted out of prison and took off after his doppelgänger.
Kerry was in the yard and saw this portion of the proceedings.

Unfortunately, devil cat took off through the back fence and Linguine went through the fence hot on his heels.  Kerry was hanging over the fence trying to get him to come back but it was no use, he was gone.
At that point, Kerry messaged me to let me know what was going on.  We both headed out looking for our orange feline but had no luck.

Despite the fact that Linguine has never been out of our yard before,  he figured out how to get back.  About thirty minutes after he left, he showed up in the back yard.  He was missing his collar.....

...and had a couple of good puncture wounds in his foot.

Apparently evil twin was a biter.

Linguine and Fettuccine love to pounce on each other, wrestle, and playfully "bite".  It makes them feel strong and powerful.

It must have come as quite a shock to realize that what he had been doing all this time with his brother was "play".  And what evil twin was trying to do was "murder".

He tried to thoroughly clean his foot.  But we needed to make a trip to a vet.

It took calls to five veterinarians to find one that could see him quickly.

With Covid-19 on the rampage, visiting a vet is a different experience.  We had to call when we were on our way, then call when we got to the parking lot of the vet clinic.  They took all information from me over the phone then met me at the door to take Linguine inside.

They sent me this picture of his shaved paw with gooey stuff oozing out.

They called several times throughout his visit to keep me updated on his treatment.  Katie and I sat in the parking lot the whole time.  We were actually there less than an hour although I had expected to be there a lot longer.

When finally he was done, they told me three times that they were giving me a controlled substance that I would have to sign for.  We have to give it to him every twelve hours.

He's back home and recuperating but still can't put his foot down.

But he is a big fan of the drugs they've given him.

Mammogram

I'm having my annual mammogram today. I always hear about how painful they are, but honestly, I've never thought they are that bad. Not the most comfortable, but not painful either. Every time I have a mammogram, I'm reminded of this story. It won the Erma Bombeck Writing Competition and I still get a kick out of it every time I read it. So I'm posting it here today for your reading pleasure: Erma Bombeck Writing Competition 1st place in Humor Category Winner Leigh Anne Jasheway of Eugene, Oregon "The First Time's Always the Worst" The first mammogram is the worst. Especially when the machine catches on fire. That's what happened to me. The technician, Gail, positioned me exactly as she wanted me (think a really complicated game of Twister - right hand on the blue, left shoulder on the yellow, right breast as far away as humanly possible from the rest of your body). Then she clamped the machine down so tight, I think my breast actually turned inside o...

Ben's Feet

Ben went camping with his youth group this weekend. He said it was the best weekend he's had since we've been in Hawaii, and possibly in his entire life. The one negative part was that he stepped on some coral out in the water and cut his feet up pretty good. He swears it was all dead coral - you shouldn't touch live coral, much less walk on it because it damages the coral. No one ever mentions that it also damages your feet. They just tell you not to damage the coral. Also, coral is a living organism . If you step on live coral and a tiny piece breaks off in the cut, it will continue to grow. Did you see the movie Alien ? If some creature incubates in Ben's feet, then breaks out and eats us all one night, I'm going to be quite miffed. (Make sure you read the inscription on his tee shirt in this picture. It's quite appropriate.)

Luau, Luau

This week we attended our first luau! We went to the luau at the Hale Koa hotel. The grounds were just incredible. There were men playing soft Hawaiian music, the plants and flowers were glorious. There were people in native costumes making headbands out of palm fronds, chopping up fresh coconut for us to taste, handing out flowers for us to put behind our ears and handing out seashell leis to each guest. It was very relaxed and peaceful. This was a Samoan man who kept us entertained during the cocktail hour. He was very funny! Check out those tattoos. He said the tattoos were part of a rite of passage that he had to go through. He said it took fourteen days to complete the tattoo and, yes, it hurt. And yes, everything was tattooed. He demonstrated how to climb a coconut tree using only a bandanna around his feet. They picked people out of the audience and gave them a quick hula lesson. Katie was thrilled to be one of the people chosen and of course it irritated Ben because he thi...
